Community Outreach
The mission of master gardeners is to bring research-based horticulture information to our communities. In Virginia Beach, we accomplish this mission by connecting with residents in as many places as we can. In addition to the programs below, VBMGs plan and host the Gardening Talks series, staff Ask a Master Gardener clinics and Help Desk, teach Rain Barrel workshops, and participate in several community events.
Horticulture Therapy Workshops
Virginia Beach Master Gardeners visit Nursing Homes and Rehab Centers in the City of Virginia Beach to share educational and hands-on experiences in horticulture with the patients. Patients will be given the opportunity to continue to learn, grow and participate in activities related to nature, horticulture and the world around us. Some of the programs planned for the future include, but are not limited to, learning how to force bulbs, creating a dish garden, creating art and holiday decor from natural materials.

Seed Library
VBMGA has been stocking a Seed Cart at the front of the Central Library since 2018.  Each month we provide a new set of seeds (Vegetable, Herb and Flower) for participants of the program to pick up from the cart. In 2021 we also opened seed carts at Princess Anne and Kempsville Libraries.

This project is designed to offer a collection of organic, non-GMO and open-pollinated seeds at the MEO Virginia Beach Central, Princess Anne and Kempsville Libraries.  Any citizen can come into the library and take a one each per month of a vegetable, herb and flower pack of seeds to grow in their own yard.  Each month there will be a new variety of seeds offered.  In addition, educational programs will be offered at the library to share the best methods to produce healthy plants from the seeds offered. Since 2018, over 300,000 seed packets have distributed! The seed library will be open whenever the library is open.  On the first Monday and the third Saturday (from 1-4 pm) of each month, Master Gardeners will be on-site to answer your questions.
