Crepe Myrtle

Lagerstroemia indica

  • Size at Maturity:   20-30+ feet with the white Natchez being the tallest species

  • Light requirement:  Full Sun

  • Soil moisture:  moist well drained soil, drought tolerant once established

  • Seasonal interest:  exfoliating bark in winter; long summer bloom time (mid June - September); early fall leaf color

  • Value to wildlife:  attracts bees and other pollinators and birds (cardinals, finches, juncoes, sparrows)

  • Value to environment:   It has been over-planted in our region and we encourage consideration of similar-sized blooming trees to add diversity, such as Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), Redbud (Cercis canadensis), White Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus) and Virginia Stewartia (Stewartia malacodendron)
